Great Stories Will Help Our Country Grow

One of my favourite storybook characters as a child was Mrs Tiggywinkle from The Tale of Mrs Tiggywinkle by Beatrix Potter. She was a hedgehog who miraculously reinvented herself daily - without ever compromising her true identity - into an industrious entrepreneur who ran a laundry service! There she was bustling across the rolling green hills of the English countryside, a world that for me existed only in storybooks, the conversations of my parents and birthday cards from relatives.

Baby Play a Crucial Pillar of Literacy Development

I have just achieved one of my ambitions as an early literacy specialist – helping to bring into being several little board books for babies and toddlers in all of our 11 official languages. You may ask why on earth babies and toddlers should get books when they cannot even talk yet, and how can it matter what language to use when the babies obviously cannot even read?

Here is why I think it matters – enormously.

Wits SRC to Protest Against Fee Increment

The University of the Witwatersrand SRC on Tuesday said it rejected the 8% fee increase and would mobilise students to protest against it in January.

"We obviously need to challenge the 8% increase as it will deny access to students," Student Representative Council president Kefentse Mkhari said.

"What guarantee is there that those currently studying here, who already have student debt, will be able to return to study next year, with an 8% increase?"

Former Teacher Stabs Principal

Principal Nothemba Lebepe was doing her routine praying ritual in her car when a former teacher allegedly smashed the window of her car with a hammer and stabbed her several times.

This was about six hours after the teacher, 42, had allegedly sent Lebepe, 52, an SMS threatening to put her in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.
The teacher was expelled last year for having fake qualifications.

Gauteng education department spokesman Oupa Bodibe confirmed the teacher was expelled in 2015 for fraudulent qualifications.

Wits Student Leaders Meets with Management

Fifteen student leaders are expected to meet to negotiate free education with Wits University management in Solomon House on Thursday morning.

There are strict controls in place at entrances by security and everyone who enters must prove they are a student by presenting their student cards.

There is a heavy police presence with police sniffer dogs and dozens of officers making their rounds on campus.

Wits' Senate says the academic calendar will be extended by two weeks.

Blade Talks to Matrics about Burning Property

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande on Tuesday urged a group of matric students to speak out against the burning of university property.

"I hope you will be a generation that will value our educational property. You must say, as young people,- 'don't destroy our property because we may need it'," he said.

He was speaking at the release of a book which chronicles the history of his alma mater, Georgetown Secondary School in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg, where he was a pupil in the 1970s.
