SADC Hit by Drought

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) region is experiencing a devastating drought episode associated with the 2015/2016 El Niño event which is negatively impacting on livelihoods and quality of lives.

The region experienced a delayed onset of the 2015/2016, rainfall season, followed by erratic rains.

Analysis of rainfall performance shows that the October to December 2015 period, which represents the first half of the cropping season, was the driest in more than 35 years in several southern parts of the region.

Maize Imports to Increase SA Account Deficit

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has warned that imports of maize as a result of the drought could increase the South Africa’s current account deficit.

The bank, which released its 2016 Financial Stability Review Report, is of the view that this gives rise to financial stability risks.

The Reserve Bank says a combination of the drought and a weaker exchange rate has impacted agricultural commodity prices severely.

Food Shortages Increase Due to Drought

The United Nations Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator says that Zimbabwe faces rising food shortages as drought, exacerbated by the El Nino weather pattern worsens.

The strong El Nino episode has raised serious concerns regarding the impact on food insecurity, with harvests badly affected by drought conditions, raising the spectre of massive production declines of key cereal crops such as maize.

This emerged at a multi-stakeholders meeting, jointly hosted by the Office of the President and Cabinet and the United Nations System in Zimbabwe last week.

R350m to Alleviate Sanitation, Drought

R350 million has been allocated by the Department of Water and Sanitation to the Ngaka Modiri Molema District in the North West to alleviate sanitation and drought-induced problems.

The department is providing urgent relief to the Tswaing Local Municipality which has been relying heavily on underground water supply.

In recent months, due to drought and water shortages experienced in the area and small scale farmers have been forced to sell their livestock.

NGOs’ Humanitarian Needs for 2016

There is one prediction for 2016 that most aid workers can make with confidence - that the year will usher in rising humanitarian needs.

Besides displacement caused by long-term conflicts in places like Syria and South Sudan, there is also the threat of more violence in Central African Republic and hunger caused by El Nino, which is expected to bring more drought to already-parched southern regions in Africa and potential flooding in the east.

NGO Distributes Water to Communities

As residents from Senekal and Aliwal North in the Free State battle the worst drought in years, a humanitarian organisation has distributed more than 250 000 litres of water to the communities.

While the municipality has provided 260 000 litres of water to residents, it has not been able to meet demand.

The organisation along with volunteers and corporate companies have dispatched trucks to different areas in Senekal and Aliwal North.
