The framers of the South African Constitution had the foresight to include an innovative set of institutions that effectively add a fourth arm to the usual three-way division of government into Legislature, Executive and Judiciary. The modern state reaches into almost all areas of life; and modern citizens expect it to be responsive to a wide variety of their rights and needs.

Political leaders are calling for stronger leadership in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as Botswana President, Ian Khama, assumes the chairpersonship from Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe.
Mugabe handed over the baton to Khama during SADC's annual Heads of State and Government Summit in Gaborone, Botswana, while President Jacob Zuma handed his position of chair of the SADC organ on politics, defence and security cooperation over to the Republic of Mozambique.

Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, says South Africa’s electoral system is flawed and needs to be overhauled to promote greater accountability and good governance.
Madonsela points out that, “Proportional representation is a huge weakness in our constitutional democracy,” adding that, “We need someone who is purely accountable to the people. At the moment, one can fail the people and you just have to be OK with the party bosses.”

The Elders’ has made a strong push for a more transparent and democratic process in the selection of the next United Nations secretary general.
At an event hosted by the Accountability, Coherence and Transparency Group of 21 countries at the United Nations, founding member of The Elders, Mary Robinson, made the case for a complete overhaul of the current selection process.
She slammed it as morally inexcusable to allow a process to stand that places the selection of the next UN secretary-general solely in the hands of the five permanent members of the Security Council.

In South Africa, it is a commonplace to receive a ‘Key to Freedom’ on your 21st birthday. To the recipient, it signifies entry into adulthood and with it the autonomy and ‘freedom’ to forge an independent path. For the parents who bestow this key, it is a conferring of trust in their child to accept the mantle of adulthood with maturity.
On 27 April 2015, democratic South Africa commemorated its 21st anniversary, thereby marking its transition into ‘adulthood’.

The abuse of nonprofits that are, in essence, just doing their job, is on the increase. There appears to be a distinct lack of political education about our Constitution within the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party, there also appears to be disturbing and ongoing threats to independent organisations who speak out against the ANC.
