Carbon Pricing Schemes Doubles

The World Bank has previously said there is strong support from countries and businesses worldwide for carbon pricing schemes to cut greenhouse emissions.
 
The bank says that the number of carbon pricing schemes worldwide has almost doubled since 2012 but most taxes or markets have prices too low to prevent damaging global warming.
 

NGO Calls for Climate Change Jobs in SA

Oxfam says that more than 10 percent of South Africans ‘live in extreme poverty’ on less than R16 a day.
 
In its latest report, Oxfam points out that, “South Africa faces the triple challenge of poverty‚ inequality and unemployment.”
 
“The hopes of South Africa’s citizens depend on the country’s ability to address such injustices and end social deprivation‚” says Oxfam’s programmes manager, Mthandazo Ndlovu.
 

UN Welcomes Pope's Climate Message

The United Nations (UN) has welcomed a warning by Pope Francis on climate change and called on governments to put "the global common good above national interests."

UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, points out that, “Pope Francis and I agree that climate change is a moral issue that requires collective urgent actions."

Ban, who is of the view that climate change is an issue of social justice, human rights and fundamental ethics, echoed the pope, stating that people everywhere share a responsibility “to care for and protect our common home, our one and only planet Earth."

Human Resilience: Indigenous Knowledge and Impact of Climate Change on Vulnerable Communities

The effects of climate change on human life within Africa are largely unpredictable and variable.(2) But Sub-Saharan African nations are “the worst hit and the most vulnerable”(3) to climate change, as illustrated in the figure below. This situation could “overturn decades of development efforts,”(4) arguably prompting future development projects to intrinsically prioritise climate change resilience.

Governments' Nuclear Plan Ignores its Own Energy Advice

Despite public outrage at the secretive procurement agreements signed by Energy Minister, Tina Joemat-Pettersson, and various nuclear vendor countries in September 2014, the government is forging ahead with its 9 600MW nuclear plans. On 26 November 2014, the Department of Energy announced that it has successfully concluded a second nuclear vendor parade workshop with delegations from China, France, South Korea and the United States of America. The first nuclear vendor parade workshop was held with the Russian state owned Rosatom in late October 2014.

This is a one-year fixed term contract.
