Our Perfect Wedding: ‘It’s Statutory Rape’

Women’s rights group People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) says it is looking into Mzansi Magic’s reality show showing a man admitting to targeting schoolgirls for sex.

This after pastor Fanie Mkhwanazi revealed on ‘Our Perfect Wedding’ episode that he met his bride-to-be, Bavelile, when she was a 14-year-old school-going teenager.

POWA counselling manager, Itumeleng Moloko, says her organisation viewed Mkhwanazi’s bedding of young girls as statutory rape, adding that, “We have to consult with our legal department and decide on the action.”

Gauteng to Intensify Fight Against Child Abuse

With more than 32 000 cases of child abuse recorded in the past decade (2004 and 2014), the Gauteng Department of Social Development in Gauteng vows to intensify the fight against the abuse of children.

In light of this year’s Child Protection Week, running from 1 - 7 June 2014, MEC for agriculture, rural development and social development, Faith Mazibuko is launching a campaign under the theme, ‘Working Together to Protect Children’ and sub-themed, ‘Each For All and All For Each: Communities protecting their own’.

Childline, a non-governmental organisation, says the disintegration of family values in South Africa is one of the main factors contributing to the high rate of child sexual abuse.

Call to Probe a Creche After Abuse

Saartjie Baartman spokesperson, Shaheema McLeod, states that one of the problems that they have picked up in their areas is that there are little resources available for parents to take their kids for assistance.

Report: Child Marriages Rife in Mash Central

Some government officials including Members of Parliament are sexual predators targeting minors but continue to walk scot-free.
 
The revelations are contained in a report compiled by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development following public hearings with various stakeholders on the prevalence of child marriages in Mashonaland Central Province recently.
