SPCA Lays Criminal Charges Against Tiger Brands

Tiger Brands, South Africa’s biggest food company, has had criminal charges laid against it by an animal-rights group - the National Council of SPCAs - over a pig slaughter method that involves the animals being gassed to death in cages after being lowered into a pit.

In a press statement, the organisation says it laid the charges because its concerns have not been addressed.

It notes that the system involves the suffocation of the pigs with carbon dioxide before they are slaughtered.

Tshwane SPCA: General Manager

The Tshwane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is a nonprofit organisation responsible for the welfare of animals in the Tshwane Metro in terms of the SPCA Act 169 of 1993.

The Tshwane SPCA seeks to appoint a General Manager, based in Waltloo, Pretoria.

This is a full-time employment contract.

Court Order to Keep Modise’s Livestock

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) says it has obtained a court order permitting them to keep animals belonging to National Council of Provinces (NCOP) chairperson, Thandi Modise.

The move follows a report that Modise plans to approach the courts to compel the SPCA to return livestock impounded at her Potchefstroom farm last month.

SPCA Investigates Farm Animal Deaths

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) says it has contacted National Council of Provinces (NCOP) chairperson, Thandi Modise, after having to put down more than 100 livestock that were starving on a farm she allegedly owns near Potchefstroom in North West.

The SPCA’s Andries Venter, says he spoke to Modise who maintained she was not been aware of what was going on because she is currently based in Cape Town.

Free-Range Food a Can of Worms - NGO

Animal rights organisation, Beauty without Cruelty, says there is no such thing as a happy chicken.
 
The organisation’s national chairperson, Beryl Scott, says because of the treatment of even so-called free-range animals in South Africa, the organisation does not advocate the eating of chickens, eggs or other meat in South Africa.
 
Though consumers have the option of buying free-range eggs and organic meat, South Africa does not have laws that clearly define the terms ‘free range’ or ‘organic’.
 

Molewa Welcomes Grant to Fight Poaching

The Department of Water and Environmental Affairs has announced that two international lotteries have pledged R232.2 million to the Peace Parks Foundation to fight rhino poaching.

Molewa further adds that, this is the largest single contribution made by the private sector to combat rhino poaching and crime in wildlife.

She explains: “We welcome this public-private partnership to help ensure the survival of the species.”

The Tshwane SPCA seeks to appoint a a highly skilled and versatile Fundraiser to commence work as soon as possible at the Waltloo branch of the Tshwane SPCA, Pretoria.

The ideal candidate will be required to support the manager in all aspects of fundraising and public relations for the Tshwane SPCA.
