Activists Warned Against Overthrowing Govt

South African and globally renowned human rights lawyer, George Bizos, says although the Swazi nation has suffered similar atrocities that South Africans endured during the apartheid rule, there is no need to overthrow their monarch.

Bizos, who was part of the delegates who attended the welcoming ceremony of two Swazi struggle and human rights activists hosted by the Lawyers for Human Rights, argued that, "Using force is counter-productive, civil wars are causing problems.”

The Right2Know Campaign is an umbrella group of organisations and activists campaigning to advance the free flow of information in South Africa.

The Campaign seeks to appoint a qualified financial administrator as National Administrator.

The National Administrator should have a minimum of three years relevant experience to provide administrative and bookkeeping support to our national and provincial structures.

This is a full-time positionbased in Salt River, Cape Town.

Salary: R13 400 per month before tax.

The Right2Know Campaign is an umbrella group of organisations and activists campaigning to advance the free flow of information in South Africa.

The Campaign seeks to appoint a Right to Communicate Organiser to support its campaigns for media freedom, diversity and access to telecommunications - the Right to Communicate.

With limited budget of R12 000 a month R2K will consider appointing someone either full-time, part-time or on a retainer – depending on the successful candidate’s skill, knowledge and experience.

Free State health MEC, Benny Malakoane’s spokesperson, Mondli Mvambi has condemned activists’ ‘insulting slogans’ and deemed them ‘inappropriate’.

Mvambi states that, “The executive council, including the premier [Ace Magashule], has expressed confidence in Malakoane’s plans to fix the Free State health department. We’ve now got help from treasury and also the national health department and we’re going to make sure the provincial depot is stocked well.”

Habib Praises ‘Incredible’ Gordimer

The University of the Witwatersrand Vice-chancellor and Principal, Adam Habib, has described the late Nadine Gordimer, as feisty and incredible as a human being, political activist and a literary giant.

Condolences are pouring in to the family of one of the literary world's most powerful voices against apartheid, and 1991 Nobel Prize-winning author who died at the age of 90.

Fellow writers, friends, government and politicians have expressed their deepest respect and sympathy for Gordimer, who became the first woman ever to get a Nobel Prize in literature.

NGOs Warns Against Crackdown Ahead of Polls

Rights group, Amnesty International, has warned that Zimbabwe's upcoming general elections will take place amid a crackdown by the state on human rights activists and opposition supporters.

In its 36-page report entitled ‘Walk the Talk’, the London-based organisation says that there is a ‘systematic clampdown’ on free speech and the right to assemble.

Zim Authorities block Youth Voter Registration

Zimbabwe’s Movement for Democratic Change’s efforts to get first-time voters to register are being undermined by a concerted effort from the authorities, who are cracking down on individuals and groups seen mobilising youths to register.

On 5 May 2013, police arrested three volunteers from the Election Resource Centre (ERC) for carrying out activities under the group's popular 1st Time Voter Generation campaign, which encourages young people to register as voters.

Desmond Wins Templeton Prize

The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation says the award of the 2013 Templeton Prize to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is an acknowledgement of his spiritual journey on Earth.

The Foundation’s director, Mpho Tutu, describes Tutu as, "…an activist, who for more than forty-years has spoken truth to power. But he is, at heart, a pastor."

The 81-year-old Nobel peace laureate, who rose to fame in the 1980s as a vocal opponent of South Africa's white-minority apartheid regime, would be presented with the award at a ceremony in London next month.

Rights Lawyer, MDC Aides, Charged

Four aides to Zimbabwe's Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai, have been charged with breaching the official secrets code as their lawyer was accused of obstructing justice.

A magistrate on Tuesday ordered them all back into custody despite a high court order instructing the police to free the lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa.

Mtetwa, a top human rights lawyer, is accused of shouting at the police while she attended to calls for legal help when Tsvangirai's aides were arrested.
