Protest March to Mark Anniversary of Kidnapped Girls

Nigeria and the world marked the first anniversary of Boko Haram's abduction of 219 schoolgirls with protest marches, candlelit vigils and pledges of solidarity.

Campaigners also used the focus of the anniversary to highlight the situation in the girls' hometown should they be released, cataloguing the devastation wreaked by six years of conflict.

Zimbabwe Urged to Find Missing Activist

Amnesty International (AI) has called on the Zimbabwean authorities to ‘urgently’ step up their search efforts for abducted journalist and pro-democracy activist Itai Dzamara and update the public on any progress so far, a month after his enforced disappearance.

A High Court judge last month ordered Zimbabwean police and state security agents to search for Itai Dzamara, including by advertising on radio and newspapers, and to give fortnightly updates to the Court.

Call to Bring Back Abducted Girls

As worldwide outrage grows over the abduction of Nigerian School girls a month ago, Malawi has joined the entire world in the ‘Bring Back Our Girls Campaign’, which is running across the world.

It is almost a month now that more than 200 girls were abducted from their school in Chibok, a town in North Eastern Nigeria and their school was set on fire.

Validity of ‘Ukuthwala’ Depends on Definition of Custom

Since 2008, a series of cases in which young girls have been abducted and forcibly married to much older men in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, has captured national attention. Journalists and community members have grouped these abductions together under the heading of ‘ukuthwala’ cases. Men who have committed these abductions defend them as customary, and some traditional leaders agree. However, representatives from the Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (CONTRALESA) and from women’s human rights groups have asserted that such forced marriages go against custom.
