New Name, New Look for Music Therapy Community Clinic

The Music Therapy Community Clinic - a lauded Cape Town non-governmental organisation (NGO) - has launched a brand new identity, including a new name and logo. Now known as MusicWorks, this pioneering organisation has been serving the communities of Heideveld, Lavender Hill, Langa and Nyanga with musical interventions for children and young people since 2002. More than 500 children benefit from their music programmes each year.

Activate! Recognises Top 10 Social Development Projects for 2014 at Innovation Showcase

Projects ranging from environmental education and improved Mathematics learning to astronomy-based tourism were among the top ten social development projects for 2014 recognised at the Activate! Innovation Showcase held in Magaliesberg (17 - 18 January 2014).
 
Chosen from 87 exceptional social development initiatives that are either already being implemented or are in the planning phases, the top ten were selected by more than 350 youth leaders from the Activate! network, potential funders and delegates from related social development agencies and organisations.
 

New Year’s Eve in Cato Manor: An Occupation, Police Violence, Arrests and Fire

Just after three o’clock on the morning of 1 January 2014, the River View Flats in Cato Manor were occupied. Some of the occupiers had previously been evicted from this block of flats and others were from the Marikana Land Occupation, also in Cato Manor.
 
The security guards stationed at the block of flats tried to prevent the occupation by firing rubber bullets at the occupiers but they were outnumbered and they were not able to stop the occupation. Around fifty people were able to gain occupation of the block flats which was then renamed Amandlethu Village.

Here we go again. Every time that this country’s nonprofit part of civil society imagines that its independence is secured and respected by politics, out they come to have another crack at subverting that independence.
 
Our Constitution, often mistakenly called ‘the most liberal in the world’, guarantees freedom of association and therefore also of disassociation. Try telling that to nonprofit organisations (NPOs).
 

Beware of Fraudsters Cashing in on Good Faith

Christmas is a time of giving and unfortunately it is also a time where unscrupulous people try to take advantage of people’s generosity, according to Kathy Jooste, chief executive officer for Avril Elizabeth Home for the Mentally Handicapped.
 
Jooste said her concern was based on reports reaching the Home that there were people posing as representatives of Avril Elizabeth Home and collecting funds in its name.
