Affordable Pentium 4 Computers Available to NGOs

The Papillon Foundation, founded in 2002, is doing amazing work in the community improvement fields. Papillon runs several accredited, educational, social outreach projects such as computer end-user training in a partnership with the International Computer Driving License (ICDL).  2 929 needy community members have thus far graduated from the computer courses. 4 219 community members have also graduated from the English language tuition courses that Papillon run in a partnership with University of the Witwatersrand.

SANGONeT: Executive Director

The Southern African NGO Network (SANGONeT) provides a wide range of information communication technology (ICT) services to NGOs and other development organisations in the Southern African region.

Established in 1987, SANGONeT is still one of very few NGOs in Africa involved in ICT issues. SANGONeT’s flagship activities include the NGO Pulse Portal, Prodder NGO Directory, SANGOTeCH technology donation programme, various ICT and related events, and many others.

Six Steps to Surviving 2013

2012 has been a tough year for civil society. Those funding cuts that we’d been warned of since the crash in 2008, were keenly felt. The President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) wrapped up its second five year programme, the Europeans curtailed their investments, the United Kingdom Department of International Development (DIFID) restructured. The retraction in international funding was exacerbated by instability in local funding as the National Lottery in trying to get its house in order, struggled to deliver on its grant mandate.

CSOs and Accountability

I have attended many conferences, where various organisations provided attendees with well covered and attractive annual reports. These reports are also very often made available on their websites, making them accessible to a larger audience. This effort aimed at encouraging transparency and accountability is well-intended and applauded. It is essential that the nonprofit sector not only preach accountability, but also walk the talk, leading by example.

The Possibilities of the 'Funding Crisis'

The words ‘competition’ and ‘competitive’ are increasingly being used to address the nonprofit sector, something which should both shame and alarm us all. As a sector, irrespective of our different areas of focus, our collective mandate is to facilitate an environment which uplifts human lives and we should not be competing to do that. Instead, we should be looking for ways to support each other in the achievement of this collective mandate.

NGOs in South Africa - We Deserve Better

In the past few weeks the role of NGOs in South Africa received much attention. Various events and initiatives focussed on the funding challenges facing the sector, the need for improved governance, the relationship with government, the involvement of civil society in deepening our democracy, and the broader role and relevance of the sector in relation to various challenges facing South Africa.

Right2Know Campaign: National Coordinator

The Right2Know (R2K) Campaign is an umbrella group of organisations and activists mobilising and advocating for access to information and against secrecy in government and the private sector. R2K is best known for leading the civil society campaign on the Secrecy Bill, but its work has expanded to tackle broader issues relating to freedom of expression, media freedom and diversity and the free flow of information.

R2K seeks to appoint a new National Coordinator, based in Cape Town.
