NGO Calls for Investigation into UN Peacekeeper Sexual Abuse Scandal

UN Watch has urged the new UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon, and High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour, to create an independent investigation into allegations of sexual abuse of minors by UN peacekeepers in southern Sudan.

On Wednesday, 3 January 2007, UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer urged the two parties to act immediately to protect the credibility of current and proposed UN peacekeeping missions in Sudan, as well as around the world.

HRW Condemns Saddam’s Execution

According to the Human Rights Watch (HRW) the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein a deeply flawed trial for crimes against humanity marks a significant step away from respect for human rights and the rule of law in Iraq.

The organisation says it has documented the human rights crimes committed by Hussein’s former government for more than 15 years, adding that there was no justification for executing him.

Peru’s NGO Bill Threatens Human Rights – HRW

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has criticised  a Bill in Peru’s Congress that paves the way for the government to interfere with the activities of NGOs.

In a letter sent to President Alan García, the organisation says the  Bill, which is under intense debate in Congress after CSOs, the press and religious institutions expressed strong opposition to its terms, will undermine human rights protections in that country.

CSVR: Building Peace Through a Culture of Human Rights

The repression of the 1980’s created the incubator for the birth of many NGOs including the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), which was formally established in 1989. This was a challenging era in South Africa’s history where there was widespread political resurgence in communities that responded violently to the harsh and rigid enforcement of apartheid laws, which at one stage included the incarceration of 3,500 children.
