NonProfit Sector Legislation Overview

The Nonprofit Consortium (NPC) has prepared a helpful resource entitled Legislation Relevant to the nonprofit Sector that can be used by nonprofit organisations to navigate the legal system and by government to streamline law as well as policy governing the nonprofit sector.

The legal system of a country can significantly impact on the vibrancy of its nonprofit sector. The South African legal system has rapidly developed since 1994 with a number of laws being relevant to the nonprofit sector.

SA to Vote Against Burma in the UNSC

Business Day, 11 January 2007.

Human rights groups  and a website that reports on Burma, claim South Africa could vote against a resolution criticising that country’s human rights record.

The vote, which will be South Africa’s first since becoming a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), could indicate the stance the country will be taking in criticising countries on their human rights records.

Report Back: Anti-Weapons Protest

On 23 September, the Africa Aerospace and Defence Weapons Fair was held at the Ysterplaat Airforce base in Cape Town. Earthlife Africa Cape Town joined the Anti-War Coalition and other organizations in a protest at this event.

Protest participants are disgusted that arms companies and their South African subsidiaries, responsible for the deaths of millions of civilians across Africa and the Middle East, among other places, have been invited to exhibit their weapons of death in a carnival atmosphere.

NGO Calls for Investigation into UN Peacekeeper Sexual Abuse Scandal

UN Watch, 8 January 2006.

UN Watch has urged the new UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki Moon, and High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour, to create an independent investigation into allegations of sexual abuse of minors by UN peacekeepers in southern Sudan.

On Wednesday, 3 January 2007, UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer urged the two parties to act immediately to protect the credibility of current and proposed UN peacekeeping missions in Sudan, as well as around the world.
