Suspended Schweizer-Reneke teacher heads to the Labour Court

The suspension of Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke teacher Elana Barkhuizen is expected to take centre stage in the Labour Court in Johannesburg on Thursday when it hears an urgent application she lodged.

The school dominated headlines two weeks ago when a photograph of Grade R pupils went viral on social media. It showed black pupils sitting separately from white pupils.

De Klerk addressed an event organised by the Cape Town Press Club at the Kelvin Grove Club in Newlands, Cape Town on Wednesday.

Minister of Intelligence Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba had recalled five former State Security Agency (SSA) officials serving the country as diplomats abroad, saying the SSA is in need of their skills back home.

Among them is Thulani Dlomo, who is the country's ambassador to Japan - one of the best paid jobs in South Africa's diplomatic structures.

Calls to detain vessel carrying fish cargo from disputed Western Sahara

An organisation working to preserve the resources of the occupied Western Sahara has asked the Port of Cape Town to detain a vessel that is due to land in Cape Town on Saturday.

The vessel is alleged to contain about 5,500 tonnes of fish, caught in the exclusive economic zone waters of occupied Western Sahara between December last year and early this year.

Union wants SABC board to be disbanded

The union wants the board to be disbanded, saying they have failed to provide ways to turn the public broadcaster around.

The SABC this week announced planned retrenchments would be suspended until further notice.

The CWU's General Secretary, Aubrey Tshabalala said the board has appointed staff irregularly and handled the issue of retrenchments badly.

Zlto to expand after Google funding

Cape Town-based social non-governmental organisation, Reconstructed Living Labs (RLabs), plans a national roll out of its blockchain platform, Zlto, after receiving R3.4 million from the Google Impact Challenge last year.

The Google Impact Challenge seeks to invest in start-ups that use tech to tackle societal issues.

RLabs is a community-based skill development organisation that seeks to address youth unemployment by offering work opportunities through its blockchain start-up, Zlto Digital Platform.

Reserve Bank announces interest rates decision

17 January 2019

The Reserve Bank is largely expected to keep interest rates steady this afternoon. The Monetary Policy Committee raised rates for the first time in over two years in November.

That took the repo rate to 6.75 percent and raised prime lending rates at banks to 10.25 percent. At the time the bank said it chose to hike sooner rather than later because of inflation risks.

Pension funds reject investment in Eskom

Pension fund managers have drawn a line in the sand when it comes to government investments.The managers said they will oppose any move to force investment in state-owned companies.

The ANC announced in its 2019 Election Manifesto that it will investigate ways of using portions of pension funds for socially productive investments.

Fund managers warn the move could erode the value of pension funds. Cannon Asset Chief Investments officer Adrian Saville said it is a hard case to make for Eskom as an asset in its current state.
 

Ramaphosa expected at SA WEF delegates breakfast

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address a team of delegates, who will be representing South Africa at the World Economic Forum.

The breakfast meeting will take place in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

The aim is to develop an integrated approach to SA's input at the WEF deliberations and to identify areas of emphasis to present the country as a desired investment destination and trade partner.

Team South Africa comprises of diverse stakeholders in South African society and economy.
