Listeria tests stopped on imported chicken products

South African officials have been instructed to stop testing imported chicken products for listeria‚ according to Patricia Kopane‚ a Democratic Alliance alliance MP‚ who is in possession of a letter containing the order.

Making it public on Thursday‚ Kopane said the letter is from the Chief Environmental Health and Port Health Services‚ instructing Port Health Officials.

UN aims to eliminate yellow fever epidemics in Africa

Nearly 1 billion people in Africa will be vaccinated against yellow fever by 2026 in an ambitious United Nations campaign to eliminate epidemics of the deadly disease on the continent.

The mosquito-borne viral disease is a major killer in Africa, where it can spread fast in highly populated areas with devastating consequences.

"With one injection we can protect a person for life against this dangerous pathogen," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) at the programme's launch in Nigeria, a priority target country.

Tough anti-smoking measures

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi is widely expected to announce new measures against smoking when he opens an international tobacco control conference on Wednesday, including a ban on smoking in all public places, plain cigarette packages and gory pictorial health warnings on packs.

Over 2000 tobacco control experts from 100 countries are in Cape Town for the World Conference on Tobacco or Health, the first time that the global conference is being held in Africa.

Tons of meat recalled

The recall of millions of tons of possible listeria infected cold meat is set to create another crisis – when it is dumped at hundreds of public landfill sites scattered across the country.

And disposing of the cold meats in public landfill sites could spell "disaster", said Pieter Kruger from the Waste Group.

The City of Cape Town and Tshwane confirmed to Business Insider South Africa that public landfill sites are being prepared to accommodate the recalled meat. 

​Promises Ramaphosa made in his SONA speech

President Cyril Ramaphosa made a number of key promises in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Friday.

He outlined various initiatives that will kick off during the course of the year.

Opposition parties expressed their scepticism about the promises he made in his speech because they have no assurances of the actions that he will take to deliver on what he has promised.
