UN adds sexual violence as a reason for sanctions in Libya

The UN Security Council has authorised action against illicit oil exports from Libya for another six months and added planning and committing sexual and gender-based violence as reasons for sanctions, despite objections from Russia and China.

Monday's vote in the UN's most powerful body was 13-0, with Russia and China abstaining.

Activists plead with Ramaphosa to release woman who killed abusive husband

Civil society groups have pleaded with President Cyril Ramaphosa and Justice Minister Michael Masutha to release Martha Marumo, who is serving a life sentence for killing her abusive husband.

Chants of "release her now, release Martha now" echoed through the Saint George Hotel in Pretoria on Thursday as it hosted the first ever national summit on gender-based violence and femicide.

Ramaphosa: Country to launch plan to tackle gender-based violence

"20 000 people were killed in the past year. The majority of killers and victims are men," Ramaphosa says at summit.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that South Africa will launch a national strategic plan to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) after years of lobbying by activists.

Ramaphosa was speaking at the Presidential GBV Summit Thursday, the latest in a string of meetings convened by Ramaphosa on significant issues facing the country such as health and unemployment.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

From 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign is a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world.

The international campaign originated from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute coordinated by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991.
 

Mobile gender gap disadvantages women

Over 1.2 billion women in low- and middle-income countries do not use mobile Internet and 184 million fewer women than men own mobile phones in these countries.

This is according to a new report from the GSM Association (GSMA) titled: The Mobile Gender Gap Report 2018. The analysis is based on findings from quantitative face-to-face surveys in 23 low- and middle-income countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America. This includes SA.

#MeToo Campaign

The #MeToo campaign has given mostly Western women confidence to speak up about violence at the hands of men, but in Africa women say stigma and victim-blaming still keep many silent.

32 years in prison for Karabo Mokoena's murderer

Convicted murderer Sandile Mantsoe has been sentenced to a cumulative 32 years in prison after murdering his ex-girlfriend Karabo Mokoena.

There were audible gasps in South Gauteng High Court on Thursday as acting judge Peet Johnson described Mantsoe as the devil in disguise.
