Earthlife Speaks Out on Power Cuts

SANGONeT, 22 January 2007.

Earthlife Africa has blamed the recent power cuts affecting the country on the highly centralised electricity supply industry made up of large generation units and with long transmission routes from a few centers of supply.

The organisation’s renewable energy activist ,  Richard Worthington ,  argues that Eskom, which is still dominating energy planning in the country, is not showing competence in planning the operation and maintenance of its plants.

New Toolkit to Help South Africans Understand EIAs

The Herald, 8 January 2007.

The Endangered Wildlife Trust has launched a web-based toolkit to help ordinary South Africans understand environmental impact assessments (EIAs).

The toolkit uses flow charts and lists the contact details of each of the provincial environmental authorities. It also answers frequently asked questions related to exemptions from carrying out an EIA, not being consulted despite living adjacent to a project site, and being blocked by a developer from finding out more about a project.
