Lesufi ready to 'pounce'

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi on Thursday said he battled to finish watching the video of a young child being beaten by her teacher as she forced the child to clean up her own vomit.

The 1.38-minute video has gone viral on social media. It shows the teacher lowering the denim jeans of the child before she gives her a couple of smacks on the buttocks.

The child, who is crying softly, looks up at the teacher as she continues to use a cloth to clean the small green plastic table in the classroom.
 

Young, educated Africans keen on migrating

New app takes African short stories to the world

Anew local app hopes to give African writers global exposure by connecting them with literature fanatics in SA, US and the UK.

Storytelling app BookBeak says it is the first African app-based platform to aggregate African short stories from published, unpublished and self-published writers and serve them to a global audience.

The app, available on Android and iOS app stores, was founded by three young South Africans, Kamo Sesing, Cam Naidoo and Louis Enslin, and registered under their business Atheneum.

A place to call home

20 March 2019: Nobuhle Mohlala, who was raised at   SOS Children’s Villages Nelspruit, wrote an inspiring letter thanking SOS Children’s Villages SA for the loving home provided to her for more than 10 years.
 
Like many of the children who end up in SOS care, she and her siblings did not have an easy start to life. They had a terminally ill mother, who eventually died, and a father who was never involved in their upbringing.
 

Fairy godmother is helping needy students with the tap of a mouse

A lecturer moonlighting as a fairy godmother is looking to expand her network of assistants as she helps fund needy students' travelling expenses, graduation attire and monthly groceries – all with the tap of a mouse.

Over 1 400 students have reached out to the University of the Western Cape's (UWC) Fairy Godmother in the last two years, with needs ranging from textbooks to closed shoes for winte.

SA universities must lead Industry 4.0 curriculum

South Africa's higher learning institutions must up their game and increase the number of educational programmes that prepare students for the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) era.

So says Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) minister Naledi Pandor, noting that only 11 South African universities offer course modules in 4IR and related fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

"If we intend to take full advantage of 4IR, all our universities and colleges should be offering such courses," she says.

SA DEVELOPS CODING, ROBOTICS CURRICULA FOR GRADE R-9

The South African government is developing curricula for coding and robotics for grades R to 9.

So said minister of basic education Angie Motshekga. "To create a sustainable industrialisation and keep pace with the world, South Africa is developing coding as well as robotics curricula to be included in GET [general education and training] from Grade R-9," said Motshekga.

She said the curricula will provide learners with an understanding of coding and robotics, and will develop their skills and competencies to prepare them for the fourth industrial revolution.
