Mnangagwa wins 2018 elections

On August 1, following the announcement of the parliamentary election results in Zimbabwe, which saw Emmerson Mnangagwa's Zanu-PF winning a clear majority, opposition MDC Alliance supporters held a demonstration in and around Harare's central business district, claiming the vote was rigged.

In response, the Zimbabwe Defence Force (ZDF) soldiers fired live ammunition on the protesters, killing six people.

China to trade in South Africa

South Africa is likely this week to provide a platform for a Chinese-led fightback against Donald Trump's protectionist agenda as it hosts counterparts of the so-called Brics group of nations.

The annual summit of the coterie of emerging economic powers, first identified by former Goldman Sachs Asset Management Chairman Jim O'Neill, is the 10th since its leaders started meeting, and the first since the prospect of a full-blown global trade war became a real threat. The BRICS group encompasses Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Namibian mobile operator slashes data pricing

Inspired by South African data protests, Namibian mobile operator Paratus has cut its data prices by a massive 80%.

The operator announced in a statement that it reduced the cost per gigabyte from N$85 (R85) to N$15 (R15).

"According to statistics from Research ICT Solutions (2018), Namibia rates 29th out of 52 African countries with regards to the cheapest 1 Gigabyte mobile prepaid rates per month for 2018 in USD, with a rate of US$7.35," the Paratus statement reads.

Lean Thinking and Monitoring and Evaluation Practices for NPO Sustainability

In the current economic climate, the grant funding pool available to nonprofit organisations (NPOs) has shrunk. This situation requires NPOs to demonstrate how their activities provide a social return while ensuring that their operations are financially sustainable.

This requires a strategic approach that allows for greater understanding of how organisational activities lead to social return. There are two disciplines of strategic management that, at first glance, may seem unrelated, but share a lot in common and can assist in managing these tensions.

SA and Zim Review Bilateral Relations

President Cyril Ramaphosa met with his Zimbabwean counterpart Emmerson Mnangagwa in Harare over the weekend and the two leaders reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries.

According to the state-owned Sunday Mail newspaper, Ramaphosa, who spoke to journalists after the meeting, said that the courtesy call on Mnangagwa had provided an opportunity to discuss economic matters.

2018 budget speech in a nutshell

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba’s Budget Speech has seen him make “difficult decisions” to address a revenue shortfall and to fund free higher education.
An increase in value-added tax (VAT), fuel levy and a higher estate duty tax are just some of the things South Africans will be faced with this year.

On the other hand, Minister Gigaba announced some relief for the poor and the working class in the form of below inflation increase in personal income tax, while ensuring an above average increase in social grants.

Promises Ramaphosa made in his SONA speech

President Cyril Ramaphosa made a number of key promises in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Friday.

He outlined various initiatives that will kick off during the course of the year.

Opposition parties expressed their scepticism about the promises he made in his speech because they have no assurances of the actions that he will take to deliver on what he has promised.
