Engen gets storm-damaged schools ship-shape for 2019

Engen has come to the rescue of five Durban schools severely damaged in storms by committing R1 million to effect repairs critical to the safety, comfort and security of pupils and teachers. 

“Engen turned our darkness into light,” says Colin Chand, principal of Collingwood Primary in Wentworth, which was severely affected by the October 2017 storms, forcing the children and teachers into mobile units on the school fields. 

Managing Youth at Risk

Working with youth at risk means working with young people in situations that hinders their positive development. Such as: homelessness, drugs abuse, Sexual Transmitted Diseases, Juvenile delinquency. Besides working with youth in natural disasters and conflict areas.

The aim of this program is to help youth workers to understand the nature and the circumstances of youth at risk. The program presents approaches of managing young people at risk, at risk policy development, and at risk program development.

The Deputy Principal of Seshegong Secondary School in Centurion has implemented changes that have drastically reduced the number of disciplinary incidents at the school, leading educators at other schools to replicate his successful methods.

Thirteen-year-old Limpopo pupil wins national storytelling contest

Story Bosso is a multilingual storytelling contest designed to provide aspiring storytellers with an opportunity to showcase their talent and to promote storytelling in all official South African languages. It’s an initiative of South Africa’s national-reading-for-enjoyment campaign, Nal’ibali.
The theme for this year’s talent search was ‘South African Heroes’.  By remembering and telling the stories of our heroes, the campaign aimed to inspire greatness in all South African children.

About the course

Development programs and policies are typically designed to create change to the target beneficiaries. Whether or not these changes are actually achieved is a crucial public policy question but one that is not often examined. Impact evaluation assesses the changes that can be attributed to a particular intervention, such as a project, program or policy, both the intended ones, as well as ideally the unintended ones.

A group of public and community stakeholders have re-affirmed that Mpumalanga’s future lies in its young children.

Smartstart and Penreach hosted a regional launch on 18 October at the Ehlanzeni District Municipality, to introduce the future of Early Childhood Development (ECD) in Mpumalanga.   SmartStart is an early learning social franchise and was established with the intention of creating universal access to early learning opportunities for 3-and 4-year olds in South Africa. SmartStart’s goal is to bring quality and affordable early learning to one million children annually by 2025.
 

COMMUNITY GYM FOR SOWETO RESIDENTS

Mofolo residents in Soweto now have a brand-new outdoor gym in their park.

The gym, which is a collaboration between Joburg City Parks and Zoo and Hi-Tec, was officially opened to the public on 17 October 2018. In celebration of the launch, Joburg City Parks and Zoo hosted an event that was attended by residents, learners from Emisebeni Primary School and City of Johannesburg officials.

Futuregrowth the only institutional investor in SA’s first ECD social impact bond

Specialist investment company Futuregrowth Asset Management, acting on behalf of client funds, recently concluded an investment in the Impact Bond Innovation Fund (IBIF), a South African outcome-based financing mechanism that seeks to improve early childhood learning and development (ECD) outcomes in the Western Cape.

The capital has been invested through the Futuregrowth Infrastructure and Development Bond Fund, a specialist yield enhanced bond portfolio. The fund targets investments that facilitate infrastructural, social, environmental and economic development in South Africa.
