Striking Zimbabwean teachers earn equivalent of just R700 a month

Teachers in Zimbabwe - who say their salaries are now so eroded they cannot afford to buy groceries or pay for school fees for their own children - are on the second day of a go-slow to protest against hyper-inflation.

Zimbabwe Teachers' Association (Zimta) president Richard Gundane said the strike was the culmination of the government's continued disregard of their welfare.
 

Canada opens doors to some 750 ex-slaves from Libya

anada will welcome some 750 ex-slaves from Libya as refugees, Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen said Wednesday.

The number of migrants traveling through Libya to reach Europe has increased tenfold since the fall of Moamer Kadhafi in 2011, according to the United Nations.

And their fate was highlighted -- dramatically in 2017 -- by multiple shipwrecks in the Mediterranean and the broadcast of a CNN report showing a Libyan slave market.
 

Death toll from Gupta coal mine gas explosion rises to five

The death toll at the Gloria coal mine, near Middelburg in Mpumalanga, which was rocked by an underground gas explosion, has risen to five.

Police spokesperson Brig Leonard Hlathi said four more bodies were recovered in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Hlathi said two people were brought to the surface during rescue operations on Wednesday. One died while the other had survived the underground ordeal.

"We don't know how many people are still trapped. The mine rescue team will continue with the operation," he said.

The Department of Social Development (DSA), which supplied these figures, indicated that numbers of registered NPOs "increase daily". In fact, more recent DSA statistics put the number of NPOs at 201,644.

Egypt sentences senior official to12 years

An Egyptian court has sentenced the deputy governor of the country's second-largest city to 12 years in prison on corruption charges.

The Cairo criminal court also sentenced Souad el-Kholy, deputy governor of the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, to a one-year suspended sentence for bribery, profiteering and squandering public funds on Wednesday.

The court acquitted five local businessmen in the same case
 

DRC seeks UN help against Rwanda rebels on border

Democratic Republic of Congo's government has asked its UN peacekeeping mission for help against Rwandan rebels planning operations against Rwanda from inside Congolese territory, the UN said on Wednesday.

Leila Zerrougui, chief of the UN mission known as MONUSCO, said Kinshasa asked in a letter for peacekeepers to "thwart" FDLR Hutu rebels who were mustering in an eastern province near Rwanda's border.

Zimbabwean lawyers march to demand a return to the rule of law

Hundreds of lawyers dressed in their black gowns marched in Harare’s city centre to the Constitutional Court on Tuesday to call for the immediate restoration of the rule of law and order in Zimbabwe.

The march was organised by the Law Society of Zimbabwe, the largest body of legal practitioners across the country.

The march comes after the group said it had noted a worrying trend across the sections of the judiciary, where their clients were being denied bail and there was a surge in the fast-tracking of trials.
