Non-profits leverage technology to support under-resourced communities

What do the three different topics of fish, citizen-based social monitoring, and youth empowerment have in common? All are associated with local non-profit organisations (NPOs) that are leveraging technology in exciting ways to make a difference in under-resourced communities.
 
At the recent Trialogue Business in Society Conference 2019 (Subs: 16-17 April, Johannesburg), representatives of three NPOs – ABALOBI, the Black Sash and Zlto ‒ shared information on how their IT innovations are changing lives.
 

Global Cloud Technology Survey – Announcing the Results!

In February and March 2012, TechSoup Global and its global network of partner organisations, including SANGONeT via the SANGOTeCH Technology Donation Programme, conducted a survey of NGOs around the world to better understand current cloud computing usage and future plans for cloud computing adoption.

The survey garnered more than 10 500 respondents from 88 countries.

Facebook could be forced to censor hate speech across the world

Facebook workshops unlock digital skills for 3 000 entrepreneurs

It is encouraging to see recent involvement in socio-economic development by the ITC Corporations.  Another such involvement is the on by Facebook in partnership with Digify Africa.  These companies are soon going launch the “Boost with Facebook” training programme, which aims to train over 3 000 South Africa businesses in digital tools and technologies.

Telecommunications experts discussed the importance of infrastructure investments towards the development of African Internet connectivity and terrestrial networks.  This is said to be most instrumental in facilitating the development and growth of the African Digital Economy.

Instagram head denies widely-held belief that Instagram and Facebook listen in through smartphones

Just less than ten days ago there were reports of suspicions that Instagram and Facebook were listening in on people’s smartphones for use of that information to do marketing. Facebook and Instagram representatives have repeatedly denied these suspicions.  It is an extremely persistent, widely-held belief: You were talking to a friend about X, then an advertisement about X pops up hours later on your Facebook or Instagram feed.

Huawei challenges US cyber security ‘excuse’ on ban

Huawei has filed a motion for summary judgement as part of the process to challenge the constitutionality of Section 889 of the 2019 National Defence Authorisation Act (2019 NDAA). This after the US Department of Commerce had officially placed Huawei and 70 of its affiliates on the Bureau of Industry and Security’s “entity list”, effectively banning the firm from buying components from US companies without government approval.
