CSOs Petition Against NGO Bill

Zambian CSOs are planning to petition President Rupiah Banda not to assent to the Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) Bill.

The CSOs are also challenging chief government spokesperson, Lieutenant General Ronnie Shikapwasha, to tell the nation what consultations were made and the submissions taken into consideration from CSOs when the Bill was amended.

NGO Welcomes Ginwala’s View on Women Ministry

Gender activists have welcomed former National Assembly speaker, Frene Ginwala’s comments that the establishment of a women’s ministry effectively disguised continued male domination in South Africa.

Delivering the Ruth First Lecture this week, Ginwala argued that the newly-established ministry, which also incorporated protection of children and the disabled, disguise patriarchy and the oppression of women.

NGO Report Criticises Zim Unity Government

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition is to issue a damning report, highlighting the shortcomings of the seven-month coalition government.

According to the Coalition’s Programmes Manager, Pedzisai Ruhanya, the report, ‘Can Apples be Reaped from a Thorn Tree: The Inclusive, Exclusive and Elusive Government’, criticises the inability of the inclusive government to deal with issues of transitional justice.

Ruhanya says victims of last year's political violence are still crying out for justice and yet no attempts are underway to address this.

Malema Criticised for 'Race Card' Comments

Gender activist Mbuyiselo Botha - whom Julius Malema branded as a puppet of white racists - has slammed the ANC Youth League president's accusations as "pathetic".

Botha, Sonke's advocacy head, was responding to Malema's claims that the hate speech complaint against him - which centres on his comments that President Jacob Zuma's rape accuser enjoyed herself with him - was driven by "whites opposed to black rule".

ANC Website Hacked

The ANC has distanced itself from adverts on its website offering free porn and penis enlargements.

"The African National Congress (ANC) wishes to distance itself from a selection of embarrassing links placed on the organisation's website by someone who has hacked into the ANC site," said spokesman Brian Sokutu.

Adverts on the party's home page on www.anc.org.za were offered free porn, penis enlargement, prefabrik, cortix, tarot, reverse mortgage, security system report, jet charter, APC battery, autism, a dating service and website promotion.

Zuma Wishes Mandela Happy Birthday

President Jacob Zuma said South Africa was truly blessed to have a compatriot like Nelson Mandela in its midst, as he wished the former president a happy birthday.

He said former president Mandela deserved to be honoured through the 67 minutes of volunteerism campaign, developed by the foundation that promotes his work, because his entire adult life was spent in service of South Africa and for humanity throughout the world.

Policy Failure Will Keep SA Poor

The South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) says South Africa will remain a largely poor and unequal society because the government is unlikely to amend poor policy, which will result in an economic growth rate of only three percent a year until 2030.

SAIRR deputy CEO, Frans Cronje, says a number of risk factors will become prominent in the next two decades, including the government’s retreat from growth-led development to an interventionist and redistributive policy.

Alliance Unity a Charade – Cronje

The African National Congress (ANC) is in a strong position to dump its alliance partners, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and the South African Communist Party (SACP). This is according to the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR).

SAIRR deputy CEO, Frans Cronje, argues that trade union membership amount to only a small portion of the ANC’s voter support base and that the party stood to lose very little support in dropping its alliance partners.

Larger Cabinet Essential – Zuma

President Jacob Zuma has dismissed suggestions his new executive is too big.

Replying in the National Assembly to points raised during debate on his budget vote, Zuma pointed out that, “Let me assure the House once again that the changes we have made to the configuration of departments are guided by the need to improve service delivery, and to correct the weaknesses that the people had identified.”
