Sudan Criticised for Expelling NGOs

Aid workers have warned that the decision by Sudan to expel or close down 16 relief organisations may trigger a severe humanitarian crisis in the war-ravaged western Darfur region.

In a press statement, the United Nations warns that halting NGOs’ operations would leave 1.1 million people without food, 1.5 million without healthcare and at least one million without drinking water. It describes the groups as "integral" to the world's biggest humanitarian operation.

MISA Malawi Head to Join Politics

The national director of the Media Institute of Southern Africa in Malawi (NAMISA), Innocent Chitosi, is joining politics.

“People in my constituency sent some village heads to speak to me so that I take part contesting in the general elections in May so that I represent them in Parliament,”
says Chitosi.

SANGONeT - NGO Engagements, Durban & Cape Town, 9 & 12 March 2009

The Southern African NGO Network (SANGONeT) will host two NGO Engagements in March 2009 in Durban and Cape Town respectively.

These events will be used to present NGOs with a detailed overview of SANGONeT's various information and ICT services, including NGO Pulse, SANGOTeCH, Prodder Directory and our range of civil society events.

The main objectives of these events will be to highlight how NGOs could benefit from SANGONeT's services, as well as to generate feedback from NGOs about their information and ICT requirements.

Xenophobia, UNHCR Acted Within its Mandate

An inquiry has blamed charges that the UNHCR South African office mishandled the humanitarian crisis that resulted from last year’s wave of xenophobic violence, on misunderstandings over the role of UNHCR.

The UN says many of the concerns listed in a 25-page formal complaint by SA civil society organisations resulted from misconceptions of both the scope of the UNHCR’s mandate as well as its failure to address the misunderstandings.

Zuma Blasts NMF on Mandela’s Health Reports

African National Congress (ANC) president, Jacob Zuma, has blasted the Nelson Mandela Foundation in the wake of criticism that the 90-year-old's health and security were put at risk when he attended a party rally in the Eastern Cape.

Zuma told about 20 000 supporters at a rally in Khayelitsha that the Foundation does not own former president, Nelson Mandela.

He further told the supporters that he [Zuma] was shocked to read reports insinuating that Mandela had been forced to attend the rally.

SANGONeT NGO Engagement - Cape Town, 12 March 2009
