Call for Zuma to Step Down

More African National Congress (ANC) bigwigs and former luminaries of the ruling party have joined the growing chorus of people calling for President Jacob Zuma to resign.

Among those who attended a gathering at Constitutional Hill to call for Zuma to step down were former intelligence minister, Ronnie Kasrils‚ former deputy ANC secretary general, Cheryl Carolus‚ former head of the ANC Youth League, Ronald Lamola, and former Congress of South African Trade Union secretary general, Zwelinzima Vavi.

Civil Society Campaign Aims at Zuma

As ‘persuasion and appeal have failed’‚ an alliance of civil society‚ church‚ trade union and academic organisations will announce a plan for “the people…to reclaim our hard-won democracy from those who defile it for self-interest.”

They met “in the wake of another vote in Parliament which‚ by voting against impeaching the president‚ dishonoured our Constitution and disappointed millions of people.”

Based on the results of a survey of more than a thousand CSOs in 44 African countries, 98% of respondents reported having been adversely affected.

The report notes that CSOs have a long tradition of performing crucial developmental, humanitarian and advocacy functions across Africa. It also highlights the critical challenges that CSOs are experiencing as they respond to the COVID-19 crisis and strive to survive.
