Girls and Technology, Teenage Suicide, MobileActive08...

In four days SANGONeT and MobileActive will host MobileActive08, the largest international civil society event to date, focusing on the use and application of mobile technology in support of social action. The over 300 participants at the event will assess the current state of knowledge in the use and effectiveness of mobile technology to advance social action, and investigate trends, needs and investment opportunities.

Suicide Amongst Young People in South Africa

The occurrence of suicide amongst teenagers and young adults is rising dramatically. It is the second largest cause of death amongst teenagers. Teenagers are in the vulnerable in-between stage where they are no longer young and dependant on their parents for everything; yet they have not reached maturity either. They develop physically, socially and emotionally at a fast pace and we expect them to take responsibility for their own actions.

Relational Poverty & The Modern World

The 50-minute DVD is an excellent introduction to basic neurodevelopment and traumatology for clinicians, parents, caregivers and policy makers. Drawing on the work of the CTA and colleagues in many disciplines, it helps put a broad context on the positive impact of high quality care giving, supportive family and a stable community while illustrating the devastating impact of neglect, trauma, chaos and violence.

New Website Fights Child Pornography

The Film and Publication Board (FPB) has launched the Pro-Child website aimed at eliminating child pornography in South Africa. Through the ‘internet hotline’ the Pro-Child website provides the opportunity for members of the public to report and expose incidences of child sexual abuse images found on the Internet. The website is one of the key recommendations made at the recent Anti-Child Pornography Indaba in June.

NGO Profile: Girls’Net

Gender equality occupies a central space in the NGO landscape, with organisations increasingly incorporating gender into their programming, be it around land, human rights or access to justice. There is also recognition of the potential that technology can play in achieving gender equality. Women’sNet was established to promote access to and the strategic use of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) for women’s development.

The Solutions Site for Kids

The Solutions Site for Kids is a website that provides young people tools, puzzles, games, and contests to help young people learn about the important work presented in the main Solutions Site. Created by the Horizon International, the Solutions Site for Kids includes some case studies from the main page, which have been adapted to be used by students and teachers. In addition, this site is a place to learn about solutions around the world that have been discovered by youth. Youth are invited to submit solutions as well.
