FXI Pushes for New Broadcasting Act

The Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) has renewed its efforts to have the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) articles of association amended in line with legislation and to remove government interference in the broadcaster.

The FXI believes that the articles are unlawful and unconstitutional and should be amended. The organisation says that unless this is done by the end of March 2009, it will seek a court order compelling the Minister oCommunications and the SABC to do so.

SANEF Condemns Shooting of Journalist

The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) has condemned the shooting of a Pretoria News journalist by police during a demonstration at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT).

In a press statement, the organisation called on the Independent Complaints Directorate to investigate the incident.

"Our information is that police fired rubber bullets indiscriminately at protesters after a member of the protesting crowd threw an object at them," says SANEF.

NGOs Comment on Budget 2009/10

The 2009/10 National Budget was presented by Finance Minister Trevor Manuel on 11 February 2009 in Cape Town.

SANGONeT invited various NGOs to comment on specific issues in the budget relevant to their core work and areas of interest.

Most NGOs acknowledge the unique challenges that the Minister of Finance faced in preparing this year’s budget as a result of the global financial crisis and its impact on the South African economy.

People Budget Coalition Comments on the 2009/10 Budget

The PBC cautiously welcomes the Minister of Finance’s budget speech. We are in the process of studying the details of the proposals and will issue a further more detailed statement due course.

The test by which today’s statement must be judged is to what extent it takes forward the progressive policy proposals in last week’s State of the Nation speech and those of the ANC Election Manifesto. While we welcome the Minister’s commitments to prioritise job creation and poverty reduction, many detailed proposals fall short of what is required.
