Former finance minister, SANDF chief to testify at state capture inquiry

Former finance minister Trevor Manuel and former SANDF chief General Siphiwe Nyanda are scheduled to testify before the Zondo commission into state capture on Thursday.

Last month, Zondo, who is chair of the commission, denied an application by the Gupta family's lawyer Mike Hellens to cross-examine Manuel.

This was the second time the family was denied opportunity to cross-examine witnesses.

Durban university wins court challenge to ban protesting students

he Durban high court has granted the Durban University of Technology (DUT) a temporary interdict barring students from protesting near any of their campuses.
The university filed the urgent interdict on Wednesday against 22 respondents including the university's entire SRC, the EFF Student Command as well as all registered students.

Excise tax hike slammed by Black Tobacco Farmers Association

The Black Tobacco Farmers Association (BTFA) has criticised the increase in excise tax announced by finance minister Tito Mboweni, saying it will affect their livelihoods.
Mboweni announced new increases in sin taxes on Wednesday.
In addition to excise duty hikes on alcohol, he said that the price of a pack of 20 cigarettes would rise by R1,14 to R16,66 and would increase by about 64c to R7,80 on a typical cigar.

The MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet community loyalty programme has launched a new partnership with the GROW with Educare Centres project to establish 21 high quality early childhood development centres (ECD) in under-resourced communities of Cape Town and Gauteng over the next two years.  With funding of almost R5 million, this is one of MySchool’s biggest commitments to a single project to date.
