The recent incidents which saw the deaths of musician Thorisho Themane and Matwetwe star Sibusiso Khwinana triggered shock and anger among South Africans.

Some pleaded with the authorities to do more to ensure that we're safer in our communities, while others dared the government to implement harsher sentences on those implicated in the two murders.

Paarl Boys' High probe sparks wave of support for corporal punishment

A wave of support for corporal punishment in schools followed the Western Cape education department’s confirmation on Thursday that it is investigating Paarl Boys’ High School.

Facebook comments were summed up by Adam Vuropolis, who said: “I prefer reading about this than teachers who are getting sworn at and beaten up. Keep up the good work if this is true.”

2019 Elections Voters abroad have one week left to apply to cast their vote

7 March 2019  

South Africans living abroad who wish to cast their vote in the upcoming May elections have one week to left to apply.

"In terms of the election timetable published last week, registered voters have until 23:59 on March 13, 2019, to apply and notify the chief electoral officer of their intention to vote at one of South Africa's 121 foreign missions," the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said in a statement on Wednesday.

This reminder comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa proclaimed May 8 as the official national election date.
 

Ramaphosa to launch 'Good Green Deeds'

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Thursday announce a programme designed to place environmental care at the centre of South African culture.

"Because of environmentally insensitive human action, the forces of nature conspired to set in motion the dramatic process of climate change," Ramaphosa said in his response to the debate on his State of the Nation Address (SONA) in February.

Big polluter Eskom regularly exceeds air pollution limits – damning new report

A new international expert report commissioned by the Life After Coal campaign shows that pollution from nearly all of Eskom’s coal-fired power plants persistently and significantly violates the air pollution limits in its licences.

This is not only illegal, but also means that Eskom is continuously endangering the health and violating the human rights of millions of people affected by this pollution.

The international expert report was based on Eskom’s own monthly reports of the emissions from its coal power plants, which Eskom submitted to authorities.

Testing makes you stronger

Men continue to face multiple barriers when attempting to access HIV testing and prevention services in South Africa; this is according to Dr Jean Bassett, Director of non-profit organisation Witkoppen Health and Welfare Centre. 

“We don’t think that enough is done to encourage men to access healthcare – it’s our mission to change this,” says Bassett. “We want to engage men in health issues that concern them, encouraging them to take preventative measures against HIV and Aids.”
