Load shedding will be reduced - Eskom

Eskom will implement Stage 2 load shedding on Friday, as strain on the national grid improves and “signs are encouraging” that there will be reduced rotational power cuts as available generating capacity improves, according to Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger.

Stage 2 will be implemented between 09:00 and 23:00 on Friday. 

This is the first time in almost a week that Eskom will not implement Stage 4 cuts,  which removes up to 4 000 MW from the grid.
 

SA universities must lead Industry 4.0 curriculum

South Africa's higher learning institutions must up their game and increase the number of educational programmes that prepare students for the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) era.

So says Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) minister Naledi Pandor, noting that only 11 South African universities offer course modules in 4IR and related fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

"If we intend to take full advantage of 4IR, all our universities and colleges should be offering such courses," she says.

Mokgoro inquiry: Jiba did not lie about her qualifications or mislead NPA - lawyers

There is no evidence that suggests that suspended deputy prosecutions boss Nomgcobo Jiba " in any way misled" the NPA when it came to her appointment as deputy director of public prosecutions (DDPP) in 2001.

This was the submission which Jiba's counsel made to the Mokgoro inquiry, which is determining her fitness to hold office as well as that of suspended special director of public prosecutions, Lawrence Mrwebi.

South Africa has made progress in improving skills and giving young people the opportunities to meet their aspirations.

This is the view of higher education and training minister Naledi Pandor, who said there had been questions about whether South Africa was preparing itself properly to manage shifts in the types of skills and work that would be part of the fourth industrial revolution.

Eskom implements stage 1 load shedding

Power utility Eskom says it will implement stage 1 load shedding from 11:00 to 23:00 on Thursday due to a shortage of generating capacity.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said the rotational power cuts were being instituted due to plant breakdowns, resulting in an imbalance between electricity supply and demand

Standard Bank closes 91 branches

Approximately 1 200 jobs at Standard Bank [JSE: SBK] will be impacted as the financial services provider embarks on a new banking delivery model.

According to a statement issued by Standard Bank on Thursday afternoon, a total of 91 branches will be closed as the bank opts for a digital banking offering for consumers. The vast majority of these branches will be closed by June 2019, the statement read.

SA DEVELOPS CODING, ROBOTICS CURRICULA FOR GRADE R-9

The South African government is developing curricula for coding and robotics for grades R to 9.

So said minister of basic education Angie Motshekga. "To create a sustainable industrialisation and keep pace with the world, South Africa is developing coding as well as robotics curricula to be included in GET [general education and training] from Grade R-9," said Motshekga.

She said the curricula will provide learners with an understanding of coding and robotics, and will develop their skills and competencies to prepare them for the fourth industrial revolution.

Nearly 80, but North West man proves you're never too old to study

A 79-year-old man who matriculated back in 1966 has registered at the North West University in Vanderbijl Park with the hope of fulfilling his dream to be a teacher.

In a statement published by the university, Jacob Seboko said he felt he "had too much time" on his hands following the passing of his wife 10 years ago and decided to put his time to good use while ensuring that he keeps mentally fit.
