IEC launches groundbreaking website to tackle disinformation

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and Media Monitoring Africa have partnered to fight disinformation in the run-up to the elections, chief election officer Sy Mamabolo said on Monday. 

The website Real411.org.za will deal with complaints about language that incites violence, discrimination and the publication of false and defamatory allegations about parties.

BOOSTME360 GOES LIVE, ADDS 6 000 JOB-SEEKERS

Online portal for entry-level job-seekers, BoostMe360, has gone live, listing 6 000 job-seekers 10 months after it was introduced.

Founded in May 2018 by academic publishing organisation Pearson South Africa, BoostMe360 is an online job and skills development platform that connects SME employers with entry-level employees, who are located nearby.

The portal, which targets unemployed youth and job-seekers throughout SA, is now open to the public after running a pilot test for the last few months.

Ministerial handbook amended to limit state waste on cars and trips

President Cyril Ramaphosa told Members of Parliament in a written reply to questions that his office had referred the latest version of the ministerial handbook to the Department of Public Service and Administration to align it with the macro-configuration of government.

The reply touched on two major commitments Ramaphosa made during his first State of the Nation Address in 2018; namely to reconfigure the state for a smaller Cabinet and to amend the ministerial handbook so that the perks it affords ministers do not amount to excess or waste.

Bosasa CEO's R500K donation to Ramaphosa's campaign

Multiple reports stemming from testimony before the Zondo commission into state capture this week have claimed that R500 000 was paid by Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson through a front company to the "Andile Ramaphosa Foundation".

This testimony by Peet Venter, Bosasa's former auditor, has proven to be false, News24 found.

Venter's testimony relies on his personal knowledge – he was told by Watson this payment into an ABSA account named "EFG2" was for the Andile Ramaphosa Foundation.

Sanral suspends process of pursuing e-toll debt

The South African National Roads Agency has announced that it is suspending the process of pursuing e-toll debt. 

This after Sanral's board passed an urgent resolution on the matter on Tuesday. 

"It resolved that given the initiative led by President Cyril Ramaphosa to address the e-tolls payment impasse, Sanral will, with immediate effect, suspend the process of pursuing e-toll debt. This includes historic debt and summonses applied for from 2015. No new summonses will be applied for," Sanral spokesperson Vusi Mona said in a statement issued on Wednesday. 

Ramaphosa responds to reports about his son and Bosasa

President Cyril Ramaphosa's office has responded to testimony before the state capture commission of inquiry and as well as report published by News24 relating to his son, Andile.

In a lengthy statement issued on Wednesday, the president sought to clarify that an issue surrounding a R500 000 donation to his ANC presidential campaign by Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson held no correlation with a R2-million business deal Andile Ramaphosa had with Bosasa.
 

7 trucks set alight on N3 by unknown suspects

28 March 2019

Seven trucks were set alight by unknown suspects in the early hours of Thursday morning on the N3 between Mooi River and Estcourt. 

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thulani Zwane told News24 that it happened just after midnight. 

"The trucks were set alight by unknown people who were threatening the drivers. They told the drivers to get out before, and then they set alight the trucks."

New app takes African short stories to the world

Anew local app hopes to give African writers global exposure by connecting them with literature fanatics in SA, US and the UK.

Storytelling app BookBeak says it is the first African app-based platform to aggregate African short stories from published, unpublished and self-published writers and serve them to a global audience.

The app, available on Android and iOS app stores, was founded by three young South Africans, Kamo Sesing, Cam Naidoo and Louis Enslin, and registered under their business Atheneum.
