Black Sash urges GOVT to assist poor as petrol price rises

On 1 May 2019 the petrol price goes up by 54c a litre, which means that South Africans will be paying R 4 per litre extra for petrol than in December 2018.
The Black Sash is concerned about the resulting knock-on effect on the cost of basic foods and services like transport, and the toll this will take on the poorest of the poor who are already struggling to make ends meet.  

UJ honours NASA pioneer Katherine Johnson, aged 100

Katherine Johnson, known for her pioneering work at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) received an honorary degree from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on Monday evening at the age of 100. 

Her work contributed to efforts to put the first men into space and eventually the moon.

Digital migration creeps forward

Twenty five thousand low-income households in the Northern Cape province have migrated from the analogue broadcasting system and connected to digital terrestrial television (DTT).

The Department of Communications (DOC) revealed this information in a parliamentary reply to the Democratic Alliance's question, detailing progress of the digital migration project in that province.

Ramaphosa hands over three new schools in KZN

President Cyril Ramaphosa says a new model used to build better schools in the country will help in eradicating schools without water, sanitation and electricity.

Ramaphosa was speaking in Dannhauser in northern KwaZulu-Natal, at the official handing over ceremony of three new schools.

Jhb City manager slated for chemical toilet comment

Johannesburg City Manager Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni says he doesn’t think it is barbaric to expect eleven families to use one chemical toilet.

Lukhwareni was making submissions before a Human Rights Commission inquiry into the events leading up to this month’s violent service delivery protests in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.
