Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA)

CANSA’s purpose is to lead the fight against cancer in South Africa by offering a unique and integrated service to the public and all people affected by cancer.  As a leading roleplayer in cancer research (more than R4.5 million spent annually), the scientific findings and knowledge gained from the research are used to realign CANSA’s health programmes as well as strengthen its watchdog role to the greater benefit of the public. Its mission is to be the preferred non-profit leader that enables research, educates the public and provides support to all people affected by cancer.

CANSA’s wide-reaching health programmes include:
  • Prevention and education campaigns;
  • Patient care and support in the form of 14 CANSA Care Lodges in the main metropolitan areas plus one hospitium (based in Polokwane) for out-of-town cancer patients;
  • Cancer Care Centres that offer stoma and lymphoedema clinics, medical equipment hire, toll-free line and support to children and their families affected by cancer via our CANSA Tough Living with Cancer (TLC) programme;
  • Provision of free Cancer Coping kits in English, seSotho, isiZulu and Afrikaans funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
CANSA celebrates its 80th Anniversary in 2011. Eighty years is a significant milestone for any organisation, but it is particularly significant for a non-profit organisation.  CANSA is a big family of caring volunteers and staff, united in the fight against cancer.

CANSA was rated as one of South Africa's most trusted and admired NGOs operating in the country according to the 2010 Ask Africa Trust Barometer - an annual survey reporting on corporate trust and reputation in the South African market which is based on peer review.
