The silence that is killing Zimbabweans
I worry a great deal at the moment, as I watch the rest of humanity calling for Mugabe to step down, or be removed from power, and on the other hand I see the Southern African leaders calling for 'dialogue' and essentially supporting this despot. One has to wonder what hold Mugabe has over the powers that be in Africa? This cannot be simply about race ( a black African leader being supported by other black African leaders). One hears rumours flying about that Mugabe is linked to all the other Southern African leaders through their business dealings and interests. If this is the case, one wonders why no journalist or news agency has investigated this thoroughly? If this injustice and crime is being perpetrated in the name of rich people making more money, it makes it even more monsterous, and it needs to be urgently exposed. There has to be a reason why our leadership are supporting this maniac and his catastrophic policies, and we need to find out what it is, and to get to the heart of it.
What worries me with the cholera outbreak, and the focus on the human suffering, is that this will only increase and manifest in other ways in the future, if we do not get to the root causes here. We are supposed to live in open and transparent democracies, and our leaders are accountable to us. Why is no one asking them why they are making these insane decisions in our name? We sat and watched our Government embarrassing us by denying that HIV exists, and that it causes Aids. Are we now going to watch a whole lot of other people dying, because no one will ask the question.
Our silence and our not calling our leaders to account is killing Zimbabwean's, and if this maniac is allowed to continue, this is just the beginning.-Robin Opperman.
