At the 2002 Global People's Forum, the issue of free trade was discussed in relation to sustainable development. The forum concluded that the system ‘free trade’ is not free at all and it does not support sustainable development.
A document, featured in the Environmental Monitoring Group website, compiled the views discussed at the forum. The document argues that trade and the institutions that support it, need to be fundamentally restructured so that both trade and the institutions are firmly situated within a framework of sustainable development.
