David Barnard, SANGONeT’s Executive Director and Fazila Farouk SANGONeT’s Deputy Director, contributed to the recently published book Empowering Marginal Communities with Information Networking.
The book provides valuable insights into the successes and challenges faced by development project implementers around the world.
It includes methodologies, technological constraints, implementation challenges, and sustainability issues of different projects, focusing on the empowerment of marginal communities.
Barnard and Farouk co-authored a chapter that investigates the ability of the Internet as a fundraising tool for marginal communities in South Africa. They discuss the challenges facing social justice organisations attempting to harness new technologies to promote their causes and sustainability. The chapter examines online fundraising as a medium and elaborates on the difficulties facing social justice organisations engaging with a mainstream online audience.
