Pennies from Heaven
Online fundraising remains a mystery for most NGOs operating in developing countries, such as South Africa. Local NGOs who have tentatively participated in this recent, but evolving trend report that the outcomes have been less than positive, leaving them to dismiss it as a fruitless exercise, which is perhaps better suited to the advanced infrastructure and online audiences of the western world.
This is a pity, because such negativity often makes any further forays into the frontiers of global fundraising a far more challenging task for those wishing to embrace it in the future!
If local NGOs do not develop an online presence now, we are merely leaving vacant a space which other countries and nonprofit initiatives will rapidly fill, thereby ensuring these online revenue streams are re-routed elsewhere.
In cyberspace, when it comes to establishing online relationships and communities of interest, there are no advantages attached to being a laggard. In the same way as it takes time to find donors, building one's reputation and credibility online takes time and effort and (often) many years of hard work and ongoing communicating to a group of interested and loyal supporters before you finally begin to see tangible results.
There are many different ways to choose to explore the world of online fundraising, one interesting example being the Fundable website.
In order to further your understanding of the various tools and techniques, the SANGONeT team has developed a resource collection of tips and research on the topic. To visit the SANGONeT Online Fundraising section, click here.
